Last Christmas 420 Squadron AAFC decided to give something back to the women and men of the RAAF, who give the cadets many opportunities thoughout the year. The cadets decided care packages were the answer and in total 85 packages were sent. This included 10 for detector dogs and over 20 female packs (which included nice soaps, shower gel, good shampoo, sanitary products, deodorant, nail files, shower loofahs, magazines, snacks).
This is one of the many thank you notes they received:
My name is Flight Lieutenant Craig Peterson and I am currently deployed with the RAAF Heron Detachment at Kandahar in Afghanistan. Yesterday we received the magnificent care packages from your cadets. They have obviously gone to a lot of trouble to put them together and I cannot begin to tell you how grateful all of us here are for their efforts. It is extremely difficult to be away from our families, particularly at this time of year, but knowing that we have the support of the people back home makes it worthwhile.
The Heron is an unmanned aircraft that provides surveillance of the battle area. We support army operations around the clock. It is very rewarding work and keeps us very busy.
It sounds like your squadron is very heavily involved in community work which is fantastic and we wish them all luck in future promotion courses. As a former cadet myself, I know the great benefits that young people gain from being a member of the cadets. Their thoughtfulness in sending the care packages demonstrates their strong core values and is a credit to them and your organization. I will also send a photo if you wish to show the cadets.
Once again, please pass on our heartfelt thanks to the members of your squadron and their families.
Well done 420 Squadron!
