At a recent 217 SQNs home parade FLTLT(AAFC) Todd Oakley proudly received his Cadet Forces Service Medal for 15 years of service to the AAFC from their CO, FLTLT(AAFC) Mick Brett.
In 1997 after staffing AVN camps as a civilian flying instructor, FLTLT(AAFC) Oakley was initially appointed in Jul 98 as an AC(AIRTC) to 19 FLT QAIRTC. In Nov 99 he was promoted to the rank of PLTOFF(AIRTC) and appointed to the position of ADMINO. In Feb 01, on rotation he took on the role of TRGOFF and after a short stint as 219 SQN XO, he was eventually appointed the CO in 2004.
Through his service in the AAFC, FLTLT(AAFC) Oakley gained an interest and enthusiasm for the RAAF which led him to join the RAAF Active Reserve as an OPSO in Dec 00.
A highlight of his AAFC career was his successful selection to escort 4 AAFC cadets to the USA for 3 weeks in Jul 07 as part of the IACE program. Also in ’07 FLTLT(AAFC) Oakley was appointed to the temporary command of 226 SQN, whereby he continued to command both squadrons simultaneously until Apr 09 when he handed over the command of 226 SQN.
In 2010, as a secondary appointment for a short time, FLTLT(AAFC) Oakley was promoted to SQNLDR(AAFC) when he was appointed to the position of Deputy Director Administration at HQ AAFC.
After 8 years commanding 219 SQN, in Aug 12 he began parading with 217 SQN as a consultant and SME in squadron operations until in Feb 14, he was officially posted to 217 SQN where he currently provides expertise as well as training in squadron administration, instructional technique, leadership and service knowledge.
