Born and raised in Brisbane, Danny was schooled at Saint Laurence’s College. He was a cadet at No. 13 Flight at the College, where he was the lead drummer in the Air Training Corps Drum and Bugle Band. During his time as a cadet, Danny rose to the rank of Cadet Flight Sergeant.
Danny is truly devoted and passionate about the AAFC. He’s proud to say he got a lot out of being a cadet himself at Saint Laurence’s College, and he really enjoys seeing the young generation do exceptionally well at the many challenges and activities that the AAFC offers.
Danny started as an instructor in Queensland Squadron Air Training Corps in 1973 and became a Flight Lieutenant in 1986. In 1985, Danny took over as Flight Commander of No. 15 Flight (now 215SQN) at Cavendish Road State High School, a position he held until 2005.
Danny finds it rewarding to see cadets develop the same attributes and ideals that he and his parents were brought up on – respect, self discipline, punctuality, prudence, diligence, the spirit of adventure and team work. These are still alive and well today in the AAFC. Danny has gained an immense personal sense of achievement by helping to nurture these qualities.
Danny is a Life Member of the Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Association and is currently its President, Life Member of the Helicopter Rescue Service, Life Member of Surf Life Saving Queensland and a Life Member of Souths Rugby Union Football Club.
Danny is the holder of the Order of Australia Medal for services to Surf Life Saving, the SLSQ Helicopter Rescue Service, rugby union and the community. He is also the holder of an Order of Saint John for Services to Humanity, the Australian Defence Medal and the Cadet Forces Medal.
Danny can always be counted on for a laugh. He is a great motivator of both cadets and staff. Danny has one of those rare abilities to be able to use humour in a serious manner.
FLTLT(AAFC) Hoyland has just joined 2WG Headquarters, having recently completed five years as Deputy Director Public Affairs.
Congratulations to FLTLT(AAFC) Hoyland for this amazing achievement and thank you from staff and cadets alike for the wonderful work you have done over the past 41 years.
The late Eric Abraham with FLTLT(AAFC) Danny Hoyland in January 2002. Danny organised for Eric, a WW1 veteran and 103 at the time, to attend an AAFC Graduation Parade and be made an honorary Air Force Cadet with the serial number 0001. This was one of the many highlights in one of Danny’s many roles with the AAFC.
