Craigeburn resident Bryson Clews (19) knew he’d found his dream job after an encounter with an Air Force air traffic control simulator when he was 13 years old.
During the next 6 years, the teenager followed-up that initial General Service Training with three work experience visits to RAAF Base East Sale, devoting school holiday time to learning all he could about air traffic control and life in the RAAF. He joined the Australian Air Force Cadets in 2008 and quickly rose through the ranks to become an Under Officer Cadet, the highest achievable rank.
Bryson’s dedication to his “dream job” finally paid off in February when he began officer cadet training in Joint Battlefield Airspace Control (JBAC).
When he graduates in around 18 months, Bryson will join a select group of personnel who ensure aircraft and personnel safety by directing air traffic wherever RAAF deploys on humanitarian missions providing aid for natural disaster victims or in war zones around the world.
Bryson’s work experience supervisor, Squadron Leader Andrew Hoare, said Bryson was an exceptional student.
“Bryson has a very strong natural aptitude for air traffic control, grasping complex concepts very quickly,” Squadron Leader Hoare said.
“Throughout his work experience, he showed outstanding personal drive and focus towards his goal of becoming a JBAC in the RAAF,” he said.
A week into his training, Bryson was enthusiastic about his future in the RAAF.
“It’s so exciting to finally be here!” Bryson said.
“Training at East Sale is everything I hoped it would be. It’s always surprising and I’m always being tested.
“Officer cadets have to be switched on all the time and ready to meet any challenge that’s put to us.
“After I graduate, I’m hoping to be posted somewhere up north – maybe Amberley or even Darwin.”
Defence provides a national work experience program to promote young people’s development of skills and transition into the workforce.
