40 Cadets from across 6 Squadrons in No 2 Wing visited the US Navy Aircraft Carrier, USS George Washington last month (23-June). It is currently taking part in Exercise Talisman Sabre.
Exercise Talisman Sabre involves approximately 33,000 US and Australian personnel in operations near Darwin, Rockhampton, the maritime areas of the Coral Sea, and Australian ranges including the Bradshaw, Shoalwater and Townsville Field Training Areas.
More than 5,500 crew members are able to access, most of the major services a small town would have, including a library, fitness facilities, a general store, barber, medical facilities, fire department and food services that prepare and serve 18,000 meals a day.
USS George Washington facts:
Commissioned: July 4, 1992
Propulsion: Two nuclear reactors that permit the ship to steam for almost 18 years before refuelling. It’s top speed is 56 kilometres per hour and it stands about the height of a 24-story building.
