On 19 Mar 16, No 4 Wing officially commissioned two Piper Warrior II aircraft provided from its own resources, and a new Amarok glider tow vehicle sponsored by the Royal Australian Air Force Association (Victorian Branch). The Piper Warrior II aircraft will allow No 4 Wing to host AAFC Elementary Flying Training Schools (EFTS) at Point Cook to bring the best and brightest young AAFC aviation trainees from around Australia for no-cost flying training. This may result in the provision of new aircraft in the future. “Our partnership with RAAFA (Vic) and No 4 Wing’s contribution to the AAFC 2020 Development Plan aims to get all our Cadet recruits in the air within the first three months of their service,” said Wing Commander (AAFC) Shaun Young, Officer Commanding No 4 Wing. “Piper Warrior II aircraft can provide multiple Cadet air experience flights, as well as one-on-one elementary and advanced flight training. Already, the Piper Warriors have flown 200 Cadets in their first two weeks of operation. This is a magnificent achievement and a sign of great things to come for the AAFC.” Group Captain Carl Schiller, President of RAAFA (Vic) was joined by fellow Board members, former Wing Commander (AIRTC) John McCrystal and RAAFA Secretary, Carl Dillon, in formally presenting the new vehicle to WGCDR(AAFC) Young. RAAFA (Vic) provided significant funding for the vehicle, which will enable aviation to be brought to the various country Squadrons throughout Victoria, rather than regional Cadets having to make the long journey to Point Cook.
